COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Extra Table, a nonprofit food bank, is doubling its distribution this month amid growing SNAP funding concerns — planning to ship thousands of pounds of food and spend over $200,000. Trucks will deliver essential items to 66 food pantries statewide, including 10 along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  WXXV 25
  • WXXV is partnering with Geiger Heating and Air — for the annual Heat for the Holidays giveaway. Peyton Younger explains how residents can sign up for the event.  WXXV 25

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The National Academies Gulf Research Program awarded $748,927 to a USM-led team to create weeklong immersive STEM camps in Harrison County for grades three through eight over three years. The camps, which will run during quarterly and summer breaks, will use recognized STEM models to help students learn about coastal climate challenges — tasks include tracking water quality and studying coastal changes.  Gazebo Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Harrison County Fire Rescue monitors a marsh fire off Whitman Road north of Pass Christian — the fire burns in water-surrounded areas and produces thick smoke, though officials say no homes are in danger and smoke will persist for several days.  WXXV 25

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fire officials in Harrison County advised residents to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly and change batteries twice a year—keeping alarms working properly to protect families as the temperature drops and space heaters are used safely.  WXXV 25

SPORTS NEWS

  • Biloxi Shuckers outfielder Luis Lara was named a 2025 Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner after making 126 centerfield starts, playing 1,078.2 innings, and recording 10 outfield assists that tied him for the fifth most in Double-A baseball—helping the team win its first South Division title since 2019 and secure a playoff berth. He becomes the sixth Shucker to win the award.  WXXV 25
  • D’Iberville High School bowling coach Sanwaa Cooper was named MHSAA-NFHS Bowling Coach of the Year last week for leading his team to a state title last season — he now plans to expand the sport across South Mississippi by working with local bowling centers and community supporters.  WXXV 25
