Good morning, Biloxi. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 2nd of November.
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Mississippi Department of Education announced new pathways for prospective elementary teachers and special educators, effective Monday, that allow education students to begin teaching on a provisional license while taking a free Foundations of Reading course—students must score at least 80% on course assessments. The change also removes the reading test for special educators teaching mild to moderate students and comes after a statewide educator survey highlighted the need for modified licensure requirements. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Institute of Marine Mammal Studies reported that the Green Sea turtle is now listed as least concern after being reclassified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Officials reminded Coast residents to keep protecting sea turtles since the species is rare in the state and has been rescued after incidents like an oil spill — and a case of entanglement in a baseball cap. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson announced the Wild Hog Control Program application period—applications opened yesterday, November 1 and remain open until November 15 for all Mississippi counties to apply online. Submitted applications will be evaluated based on trapping acreage, historical crop losses from wild hogs, and current trapping efforts with traps available in one-month intervals based on use. - ➤ Governor Tate Reeves issued an executive order to reestablish the Presidential Fitness Test for students statewide — a move following a federal order that revived the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition.
