COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Humane Society of South Mississippi started its Empty the Shelters campaign yesterday, coinciding with National Black Dog Day + the shelter is offering adoption specials to help black dogs find loving homes.  WXXV 25
  • Joppa Shriners will host a four-man scramble golf tournament on Saturday at Bayou Vista Golf Course starting at 8 a.m.+ competitors will pay a $200 fee that covers range balls, food and gift bags, and lunch with an awards ceremony will follow.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three recruits from Long Beach Fire Department—Dylan Kippes, Samuel Starita, and William Wright—graduated today from the NFPA 1001 Firefighter I-II course at the Mississippi State Fire Academy in Jackson. Fire Chief Griff Skellie said the training will serve as a strong foundation for their careers as they meet national standards—an open ceremony marked their entry into advanced firefighting duties.  Gazebo Gazette
  • On Wednesday, September 24, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources Licensing Office moved to 1716 A.J. Holloway Drive in Biloxi and began selling commercial and recreational licenses for shrimp, oyster and crab while license sales at the Pass Christian Check Station ended. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the Wetlands Permitting Program is now at the North Bay location—call 228-374-5000 for appointments or 228-523-4093 for more info.  Gazebo Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Saint Stanislaus Rock-A-Chaws lost 52 to 0 to Mobile Christian on Friday evening—marking the first time they were shut out in consecutive games since 2001—and the Leopards scored early and kept control throughout the contest.  Gazebo Gazette
  • Pass High Pirates beat East Central 35—33 in a close homecoming game on Friday, September 26. The team will travel to Greene County High—they face the Wildcats on October 3.  Gazebo Gazette
  • Former Ocean Springs alum Garrett Crochet earned his first MLB playoff win for the Red Sox on Tuesday night as he pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowed four hits and one run, and struck out 11 batters — his 117th pitch reached 100.2 mph. This performance improved his season record to 18-5 with a 2.95 ERA and 255 strikeouts.  WXXV 25
