  • WXXV is launching a week-long series of stories on the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina starting today — it airs at 5 and 6 p.m. each day with conversations featuring survivors, local and state leaders on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  WXXV 25

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Social media platform Bluesky blocked access for Mississippi users today after the U.S. Supreme Court on Aug. 14 allowed a state law to require age verification following the tragic death of teen Walker Montgomery in 2024. The company said it cannot justify the expense of building new systems—raising concerns for free speech—and will block Mississippi IP addresses until legal challenges are resolved.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Mississippi Forestry Commission has released an online application for prescribed burn permits—this system helps farmers and foresters secure legal protection for controlled burns while alerting first responders to smoke for safe conditions.  WXXV 25

  • MDOT will release a documentary on the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on Friday, August 29, to show how crews rebuilt the Gulf Coast roads after the storm. The nearly 30-minute film will be on MDOT’s YouTube channel + short clips will appear on its social media pages.  WXXV 25

  • Singing River Health System was recognized by the American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines program — earning top honors for stroke and heart care. Hospitals in Gulfport, Ocean Springs, and Pascagoula also received awards for stroke, heart, and diabetes care.  WXXV 25
