  • Mississippi Alliance for Child and Community Advocacy hosted day one of its annual leadership conference at IP Resort Casino on Wednesday — the two-day event aims to spark leadership, advocacy and change across Mississippi’s child welfare community. The theme 'lights, leadership, action' guided keynote speakers and interactive workshops while plans for the 35th anniversary gala set for today chart a path forward.  WXXV 25
  • Operation Warm Heart will donate 20 comfort kit boxes each to the Biloxi Fire Department and the Police Department on Friday, August 22—local officials and community leaders will attend to honor first responders while the kits provide essential support to children in crisis.  Gazebo Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Air Force personnel at Keesler Air Force Base are helping measure Hurricane Erin by dropping ocean buoys from a Super Hercules aircraft of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron—working with the U.S. Navy and partner agencies to collect real-time data on waves, currents and turbulence. The outer edges of the storm may bring high winds, large swells and dangerous rip currents along the East Coast.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leaders from Mississippi State University, the U.S. Air Force, Biloxi and Governor Tate Reeves broke ground on August 19 for a 100,000-square-foot Mississippi Cyber and Technology Center adjacent to Keesler Air Force Base to boost cybersecurity and innovation. The facility will serve as the headquarters for the Mississippi Cyber Initiative and is set to open in 2027 with funding from the state legislature and private donations & local partners.  Gazebo Gazette

  • Walmart recalled Great Value frozen shrimp sold in 13 states, including Mississippi, after the FDA detected low levels of Cesium-137 that may pose health risks over time—shoppers are advised to return or discard the product.  WXXV 25
  • Health officials urge parents to talk with students about tobacco dangers since nearly 90% of adults who smoke started before 18. A new state law will take effect on Oct. 1—retailers must remove unauthorized vaping products within 60 days to keep youth safe.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
