  • Susie Davis discussed this week’s episode of Living Local— a half-hour show airing Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. on WXXV NBC 25 that explores local shops, restaurants and hot spots along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  WXXV 25

CULTURE NEWS

  • From July 31st to August 2nd, teens performed Robin Hood at the Pass Christian Randolph Center in a production written by Tim Kelly and directed by Paige Ladner—who also starred as Maid Marian. The play received rave reviews and plans are underway to expand the teen program at Theater in the Pass.  Gazebo Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WXXV celebrated the start of a new school year by naming Dr. Melody Smith as June Teacher of the Month as part of a Back to School Blitz. The inclusion special needs teacher at West Wortham Elementary and Middle School was nominated by her husband Joseph and was recognized for her long hours and work with Buddy Sports.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At 10:00 a.m. on August 28, the Mississippi Legislature will hold a joint hearing at the Capitol to explore ibogaine as a treatment for addiction and PTSD in veterans and the public; lawmakers will discuss new care options + address rising opioid overdose concerns. This hearing marks a step toward finding better solutions as veterans often face inadequate treatment and high suicide rates.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study from WalletHub ranks Mississippi as the worst state for having a baby—showing it scored 24th for healthcare costs, 50th for access, 44th for baby-friendliness, and 49th for family support. The study measures include factors like medical bills and accessibility to care that put Mississippi at the bottom among all states.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • The Singing River Health System will hold blood drives in honor of Kevin Chevalier—a local patient who spent six weeks in the ICU fighting a life-threatening autoimmune disorder and needed many blood transfusions—starting Monday, August 11 at the Ocean Springs Hospital board room, with additional drives on August 13 in the Gautier Lingle Building, Thursday in Pascagoula, and Friday in Singing River Gulfport. The drives will run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.  WXXV 25
  • Dr. Nicholas Conger at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport said Vibrio, a dangerous flesh-eating bacterium, is infecting more patients this summer and urged beach-goers with open wounds to avoid water and raw oysters—those at higher risk include people with liver disease or weak immune systems— to lower their chance of infection.  WXXV 25
