COMMUNITY NEWS

  • South Mississippians gathered on Howard Avenue in Biloxi on Friday evening to kick off August at the First Friday Block Party. The event featured shopping, food trucks, live music by bands Snow Day and Hip Pocket—and craft vendors selling goods from soaps to artwork.  WXXV 25

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A vehicle drove into the Coast Radio Group building on Seaway Road and Cowan-Lorraine Friday afternoon in Gulfport—killing one person and injuring three others while officials worked to stabilize the building.  WXXV 25

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Roy Anderson Corps celebrated 70 years Friday night at the Mississippi Aquarium where employees and their families enjoyed refreshments + gift bags and access to all animal exhibits; the company, which built the aquarium, has completed major projects along the coast and remains ready to help rebuild in needed times. Veteran risk administrator Leslie Melton, with 19 years at the firm, highlighted the company’s continued commitment to serving the Coast.  WXXV 25

CRIME NEWS

  • Gulfport Police confirmed that Jason Bourque, last seen July 29, was found dead at 12:30 Friday afternoon — officials have not yet provided details on the cause of death or the location where he was found.  WXXV 25

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In his column, Mathews urged Coastal Mississippi leaders to form an Economic Development Alliance so that mayors, supervisors and business officials can work together to attract big projects. He pointed out that while counties near Oxford already formed a group after Governor Tate Reeves signed House Bill 1897 in March, a united push is needed to match Florida’s successful regional coalition – and warned that without coordinated action the region will fall behind.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Mississippi Aquarium in Gulfport is caring for cold-stunned Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles rescued each winter — the facility normally takes in 40 to 60 turtles with a survival rate above 90. The aquarium will release five of the seven turtles still in care in September.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal court ruled that Mississippi’s law requiring social media age verification can go into effect, and a tech industry group will continue to challenge it—arguing the law violates privacy and free expression.  Gazebo Gazette
