COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After fireworks on Friday night, volunteers worked on cleaning local beaches as part of the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup Program’s Star Spangled Cleanup event—volunteers in Long Beach removed 380 pounds of litter from the shoreline.  WXXV 25
  • On Saturday, runners competed in the Sunset Kroc and Roll Race that started and ended at Golden Nugget with a route across the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Bay Bridge. The annual event offered 10K, 5K, and one-mile runs to support the Kroc Center’s services and mission on the Gulf Coast.  WXXV 25

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Animal Control Officer Christian Krebs said residents near Biloxi and Ocean Springs have seen more alligators on beaches during breeding season as social media posts report sightings departing from their usual riverbanks. He advised residents to keep their distance and not feed the reptiles since they are in their natural habitat—unless they enter a yard.  WXXV 25

  • DMR officials reopened Deer Island trails after Friday night's fire was contained and crews completed assessments of impacted areas — officials confirmed the air is clear from hazards.  WXXV 25
  • State Treasurer David McRae announced on Monday that Mississippi earned a record $1 billion in interest income from state investments—about $450 million of which went to the general fund to support schools, roads and local projects.
