  • Mississippi Aquarium is hosting a turtle release today in front of the Edgewater Mall. Three rehabilitated turtles—Delicate, Folklore, and Midnights—will be released into the Mississippi Sound at 4 p.m., and visitors can get facts and answers at a tent and van on site.  WXXV 25

  • Mississippi executed 79-year-old Richard Gerald Jordan—convicted in 1976 for kidnapping and killing Edwina Marter on the Gulf Coast—at Mississippi State Penitentiary using lethal injection at 6:16 p.m., marking the state’s first execution since 2022.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • The family of Southern Miss nursing student Lauren Johansen, killed by her ex-boyfriend, is suing Tennessee bond companies Brooke’s Bonding and On Time Bonding for $150 million because they say releasing accused killer Bricen Rivers on low bond let him flee to Mississippi—a mistake they believe led to her death.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • Car show fans gathered for the 23rd annual Scrapin’ the Coast from June 20th to 22nd at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center to see custom rides with bright paint jobs and big hydraulics. Police used a tape measurer to check cars for squatted suspensions as they enforced a new law banning raised front fenders—raising questions about whether the event will remain the same next year.  Gazebo Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mississippi State University and Keesler Air Force Base made a deal that will let service members pursue an accelerated degree program. The new plan will help eligible participants finish college faster—giving them a quicker path to graduation.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • Mississippi State University signed an Educational Partnership Agreement with Keesler Air Force Base to launch a Bachelor of Applied Science in Weather and Environment program that lets airmen transfer technical training into college credits. The program, approved in May, builds on the base’s established weather training—offering a direct pathway for career advancement.  Gazebo Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies will host a turtle release Friday (at 3:30 on the beach) in the Mississippi Sound (across from the Edgewater Mall) as they release two turtles back to nature.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Work on Biloxi's $20.8 million Popp’s Ferry Extension Project began in November 2024 to build a new 1.53-mile, four-lane roadway from north of Pass Road to Highway 90 — crews are installing a tunnel foundation to connect parking lots. The project sets the stage for a future bridge and a separate plan will replace the 45-year-old draw span using a $12 million MDOT grant and $3 million city match — officials expect completion by the end of 2026.  WXXV 25
