COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fireworks celebrations will take place along the Gulf Coast starting June 28 with shows in Long Beach, Ocean Springs, Wiggins, Diamondhead, Gulfport, and Pascagoula. In Biloxi, residents will see fireworks over the Sound at 9 p.m. on July 4 and enjoy an Independence Day game with gates opening at 5 p.m. and first pitch at 6:35 p.m.—events that vary from free entry to a $10 fee.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • This weekend, large crowds attended Biloxi’s Scrapin the Coast as police enforced new state rules that ban vehicles with front fenders raised 4 inches or more above the back & issued 406 citations and towed 60 vehicles. The event marked the first Scrapin the Coast since House Bill 349 took effect in July.  WXXV 25
  • The Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport received a visit from Defense Health Agency Director Dr. David Smith — who met with officials from Keesler Air Force Base — to review progress on a plan that will let veterans switch from DoD to VA care using electronic health records.  WXXV 25
  • Federal defense officials visited Keesler Air Force Base this week—touring the 81st Medical Group’s facilities and meeting with Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich, Governor Tate Reeves, and Department of Veteran Affairs leaders to discuss the base’s role in national defense readiness and support to the Gulf Coast.  WXXV 25
  • Governor Tate Reeves announced he will not accept Richard Jordan’s clemency petition after his appeals were rejected by the United Supreme Court, Mississippi Supreme Court, and the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit—Jordan, convicted for the 1976 killing of a Gulfport woman, is set to be executed by lethal injection today.  WXXV 25
  • Mississippi gets $30 million each year from a BP settlement that goes into the Gulf Coast Restoration Fund for strategic projects in South Mississippi. The state did not have this money for the last two years but will get $65 million in 2026—Gulf Coast Business Council Executive Director Jamie Miller said this change offers new opportunities for the region.  WXXV 25
