  • Amtrak will soon restart service with the Mardi Gras Express route and a local group asks Biloxi residents to help clean the train station on June 28; volunteers must check in at 7:45 AM and work from 8 AM to 12 PM (tasks include pressure washing, sanding rust, removing old signs, and repainting the platform cover).  WXXV 25

  • Fred Smith, the Marks native who founded FedEx, died at 80 from natural causes on June 21 in Memphis—marking the end of a pioneering career in global shipping. CRIME NEWS

  • The U.S. Supreme Court denied Richard Jordan’s appeal for a stay of execution with two days left until his scheduled execution at Parchman—Jordan was convicted in the 1976 killing of a Gulfport woman and his petition was filed in late May.  WXXV 25

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The 2025 shrimp season in Mississippi started Monday morning as shrimpers set out and reported low catch numbers—DMR said its staff saw 33 boats catching brown shrimp near Deer and Round Islands; the season will close north of the intracoastal on January 1 and south of the intracoastal and west of the Gulfport ship channel on May 1, with closing dates subject to change if catches remain low.  WXXV 25

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Biloxi native Joseph C. Canizaro, a respected real estate developer and philanthropist who shaped New Orleans’ skyline and led the $2 billion Tradition development, died Friday at his Louisiana home at 88 and leaves behind a legacy of building over 10 million square feet of projects and donating land for community facilities.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media

  • At Vancleave High School today, three-star offensive lineman Dalton Toothman (who received 15 offers) announced his commitment to play Division I football at Mississippi State University.
