  • On June 10 the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce Diversity Council hosted the Breaking Barriers: A Diversity Grant Showcase at the Knight Nonprofit Center Regions Room in Gulfport—where 16 grants were awarded for the Mississippi Power Shine a Light Minority Grants. The event featured networking with lunch at 11:30 a.m. and a keynote address by Dorothy Wilson, CEO of GCW Media, on breaking down barriers and promoting equity.  Gazebo Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Anna Leah Jolly was crowned Miss Mississippi 2025 on Saturday night after a week of interviews and performances—she is the first winner born outside the state and will begin a statewide tour with her Limitless community service plan while preparing for Miss America in December.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • Grease The Musical opened at the Beau Rivage on June 12 and will run until June 29 — the family-friendly production features live music, a real car on stage, and VIP backstage upgrades. Performances are scheduled for Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m. and for Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.  Gazebo Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality lifted the beach water contact advisory at Biloxi West Central Beach today after water tests met safe bacteria levels—advisories remain at Bay St. Louis Beach and Gulfport Harbor Beach where swimmers are cautioned.  Gazebo Gazette
  • Dr. Jessica Pruett of Southern Miss received the BioOne Ambassador Award for her work on oyster restoration from the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and the 2019 Bonnet Carré spillway openings. Her research will guide future restoration efforts in Mississippi Sound—informing state managers, educators and conservation experts.  WXXV 25

  • Governor Tate Reeves announced on June 12 that Mississippi launched the AI Talent Accelerator Program to boost artificial intelligence and machine learning skills in higher education—$9.1 million in grants will support institutions and help build necessary training infrastructure for the state’s tech industry.  Gazebo Gazette
  • The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources will open the 2025-2026 shrimp season at 6 a.m. Monday, June 23 in state territorial waters—boats must be licensed before catching or transporting shrimp. The season will end at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1 north of the Intracoastal Waterway and on May 1 south of the waterway and west of the Gulfport Ship Channel—sampling may postpone the start if many juvenile shrimp are present.  Gazebo Gazette
