- ➤ Dr. Jessica Pruett of Southern Miss received the BioOne Ambassador Award for her work on oyster restoration from the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and the 2019 Bonnet Carré spillway openings. - ➤ The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources will open the 2025-2026 shrimp season at 6 a.m. Monday, June 23 in state territorial waters—boats must be licensed before catching or transporting shrimp. The season will end at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1 north of the Intracoastal Waterway and on May 1 south of the waterway and west of the Gulfport Ship Channel—sampling may postpone the start if many juvenile shrimp are present.
