COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cooper Cross, an Eagle Scout, is teaming up with the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence to furnish and decorate the Family Justice Center's lobby today—he plans to update the doors, front desk, furniture and add a mural by a local artist to create a calm space for clients.  WXXV 25

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jazz in the Pass will return on Sunday, May 25th at War Memorial Park in Pass Christian from noon to 8 p.m. featuring headlining act Rocking Doopsie Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters closing the event—local food and craft vendors will also be on site—ensuring a day full of live music and community engagement.  WXXV 25
  • A Biloxi tradition returns at Point Cadet tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.—the Gulf Coast Oyster Cook-off and Festival will feature top South Mississippi seafood, live entertainment, craft vendors, and the Corvettes and Oysters Car Show.  WXXV 25

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NOAA forecasts an above average Atlantic hurricane season with 13 to 19 named storms as this summer marks the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. WXXV will air its Storm Ready Special on NBC on Wednesday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m.+ on FOX on Thursday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m. and on Gulf Coast CW on Friday, May 30 at noon.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mississippi Highway Patrol will deploy extra troopers on highways from Friday until midnight Monday during Memorial Day—enforcing seat belt, speeding, distracted, and impaired driving laws as part of the Click-it or Ticket campaign.   • Gov. Tate Reeves said he will call a special session next week after lawmakers failed to pass a budget earlier this year—House Speaker Jason White and Lt. Gov.   • The Mississippi Department of Transportation urged drivers to check tire tread, air pressure, spare tire and battery—advice to prepare for heavy Memorial Day travel. Officials said non-emergency lane closures were paused on May 23—and will remain until May 26.  WXXV 25
