COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Gulf Coast Skateparks Association will hold a youth skate clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 16 at the Biloxi DIY Skate Park on Hopkins Boulevard — participants must wear helmets, sign waivers, and have a parent present.  WXXV 25
  • Biloxi community members gathered on Wednesday to honor fallen law enforcement officers in a memorial ceremony that featured reflections, prayer, and a bagpipe performance. Local groups will continue paying tribute throughout the week.  WXXV 25
  • Handsboro Baptist Church united community members with local officers during National Police Appreciation Week in Gulfport. Children wrote personal letters and joined a luncheon with prayer and fellowship to show support on and off duty.  WXXV 25

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mississippi Aquarium partnered with USM’s School of Ocean Science and Engineering and local collaborators to open the interactive exhibit Toxic Beauty: Plastic’s Hidden Cost at the facility, where art made from 3,000 pounds of Gulf Coast debris explores plastic pollution, open through Sept. 7 (Labor Day).  Gazebo Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Singing River Health System’s Pascagoula Hospital hosted a graduation for the Project Search class of 2026 where four students completed a year-long program preparing them for the workforce (all graduates have now secured jobs, marking a program first).  WXXV 25

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Woodside Wildlife Rescue in Pass Christian received a federal permit to expand its bird rehabilitation efforts along the Mississippi Gulf Coast + the permit now lets the group care for migratory birds without limit. The organization is seeking further authorization for hawks and eagles and thanks its key supporters.  WXXV 25
  • Experts report that termite swarming season is at its peak along the Gulf Coast; residents have noticed hundreds of winged insects near outdoor lights after sunset. While most swarmers die quickly, higher numbers may signal a developing colony that could later impact homes (advisory for caution).  WXXV 25
  • The Mississippi Aquarium and Southern Miss have unveiled “Toxic Beauty: Plastic’s Hidden Cost,” an interactive exhibit in Gulfport showcasing artwork made from nearly 3,000 lbs of trash collected during beach cleanups — the exhibit is open until Sept. 7 and invites visitors to complete a survey on plastic waste impacts.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City of Gulfport is advancing its north-south road project after MDEQ approved two permits, marking a key step for its $48.5M plan that includes an emergency evacuation corridor and I-10 crossing. Local groups oppose the project because it may harm wetlands + aquatic areas.  WXXV 25

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Biloxi Shuckers are hosting a Play Ball Weekend for local youth to display baseball and softball skills and offer a chance to compete for a World Series championship (Community Manager David Blackwell confirmed details). The event will run from June 5 to June 7 at Keesler Federal Park.  WXXV 25
  • The Ocean Springs Lady Greyhounds beat the Hernando Lady Tigers 4-2 after scoring three early runs — keeping their state championship hopes alive. They will return to the field today at 2:30 to continue their title push.  WXXV 25
