- ➤ Fourteen years after a fire destroyed three businesses, Biloxi Community Development will build a new entertainment space on the vacant lot at 781 Howard Avenue. Community Director Jerry Creel said the project will feature a two-story building with a balcony, walkways leading from Howard and George Ohr, and a courtyard with a fountain — all designed to help revitalize downtown. - ➤ At the April General Membership meeting at the Knight Nonprofit Center, the University of Southern Mississippi and the Gulf Coast Business Council announced a new executive leadership academy—set to provide a nine-month curriculum at Southern Miss Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach for current and emerging business leaders. USM President Dr. Joe Paul said the academy will offer upskilled training to boost the region’s professional growth. WXXV 25

- ➤ The Crawfish Music Festival has returned to the Coast Coliseum this week, offering top musical acts, rides, games, and plenty of crawfish—Wednesday featured special deals on rides. WXXV 25
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A nationwide study by the American Lung Association shows air quality in three Mississippi metro areas worsened since 2024—Jackson’s ozone rating dropped from an A to a B, Tupelo’s clean record shifted, and Gulfport-Biloxi’s ozone grade fell from a B to a C despite strong marks for particle pollution. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality noted that all locations meet federal standards and warned that the new grading method might not accurately reflect true air quality. - ➤ Starting this summer, Amtrak will launch its Mardi Gras Service—twice daily train trips between New Orleans and Mobile with stops in Bay Saint Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi and Pascagoula. The state-sponsored service will offer morning and evening departures and provide riders direct connections to other long-distance trains. WXXV 25
- ➤ Nearly six weeks after 18 tornadoes hit 25 counties and killed seven people, Mississippi still has not heard from the White House on FEMA aid—Governor Tate Reeves requested assistance for 20 counties on April 1.
