- ➤ On Saturday, the Gulf Coast Skateparks Association held a community yard sale in Biloxi to raise funds for a permanent skatepark at the Biloxi underpass. President Tyler Prowant said the idea came from his sister-in-law — unsold items were donated to a nonprofit as volunteers helped build a concrete park that they plan to finish in about 2 years. - ➤ Gulf Coast Skateparks Association will host a youth skate clinic on April 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the DIY skatepark on Hopkins Boulevard in Biloxi — volunteers will guide young skaters and answer questions while helmets are required and pads are encouraged, with helmets provided to those who need one. - ➤ The Gulf Coast Skateparks Association will host the second annual Biloxi Skate Fest on May 9 and 10 at the DIY Skatepark on Hopkins Boulevard—May 9 will have a best trick contest, ramp jam and an after party while May 10 will feature youth and adult contests with live music, food trucks and skate lessons for non-skaters. - ➤ Lillia Fuller of Pass Christian High School was named STAR Student for the 2024-25 school year by the Mississippi Economic Council STAR program and selected Heidi Byrd as her STAR Teacher. - ➤ Fifteen years after the Deepwater Horizon spill, experts in Gulfport say the disaster that killed 11 people and released 134 million gallons of oil over 87 days still harms our seafood industry and marine life. Dr. Moby Solangi of the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies explains that water changes from the 2019 Bonnet Carre spillway opening have led to increased marine deaths—prompting calls to open the Morganza spillway to help protect our local ecosystem and economy.
