COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, Apr. 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., CASA of South Mississippi will swear in nine new volunteer advocates at the Knight Nonprofit Center in Gulfport + Judge Michael Dickinson and Judge Sean Courtney will lead the ceremony as the volunteers, who completed over 30 hours of training, prepare to support children in foster care.  Gazebo Gazette
  • The Parkinson’s Foundation is hosting a fundraiser tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at four Coast Raising Cane’s locations (Pascagoula, Ocean Springs, Biloxi, and Gulfport); customers just need to mention the fundraiser or use the code ‘R-C-FUND 96’ when ordering for a 15-percent donation.  WXXV 25
  • Lola and Friends Bunny Rescue in Saucier reported that many bunnies given as Easter gifts are later abandoned outdoors when owners are unprepared for long-term care. The rescue urges potential pet owners to learn proper rabbit care (including spaying and neutering) before taking a bunny home.  WXXV 25

  • The Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce accepts small business grant applications starting at $500, and applications close at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, May 4 in Biloxi, Gulfport, Long Beach, and Pass Christian.  Gazebo Gazette

  • Lynn Meadows Wings Performing Arts Group teams with Beau Rivage for the fundraiser 'Dreams' on Thursday, Apr. 23 in Biloxi. The event features actors, singers, and dancers with headliners Heather Johnson + Morgan Valentine.  WXXV 25

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Junior Honors College student Ashe Davis from USM on the Mississippi Gulf Coast won the Barry Goldwater Scholarship for excellence in STEM (she is the 30th Southern Miss student to receive the award) and will pursue graduate studies in materials science after her bachelor's degree.  Gazebo Gazette
  • Four sixth-graders from Coast Episcopal School, known as the CES Robo-Raiders, will travel from Long Beach to California to compete at the Western Edge FIRST Robotics Invitational from May 28 + 31.  Gazebo Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in D'Iberville face delays as a two-phase utility project begins along Lamey Bridge Road today, with phase one closing northbound lanes and phase two scheduled for April 20 to close all lanes and require detours via Mallett, Daisy Vestry, and Sangani Boulevard for up to two weeks.  WXXV 25
  • The IRS announced on Tuesday that Mississippians impacted by Winter Storm Fern now have until June 8 to file federal tax returns without penalties if payments are made on time, while state tax deadlines remain unchanged.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media

  • At Trustmark Park on Tuesday, Apr. 14, Ole Miss beat Southern Miss 10-3 as Tristan Bissetta’s four-hit night powered the Rebels to a six-game winning streak. Southern Miss struggled to advance runners & is on a three-game losing skid.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • Addison Davis, a sophomore catcher at Pearl River Central, leads Mississippi with 14 home runs and helps her Blue Devils team move to 7 to 1 in regional play as they edge closer to a fifth district title today. She broke season and single-game records last Friday with three home runs.  WXXV 25
  • No. 4 Mississippi Gulf Coast won its fourth straight MACCC Championship Tuesday in Brookhaven — the Bulldogs overcame an early deficit to secure the title, with Logan Jensen earning the medal after finishing 4-under in the championship round.  Gazebo Gazette
  • St. Patrick Softball hosted East Central in its final regular season game, with the Lady Hornets scoring in the first and fourth innings while St. Patrick added one run in the sixth — strong defense and pitching gave East Central a 2 to 1 win.  WXXV 25
