EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nearly 60 middle school students competed on March 18 at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in a math tournament, and the top winners will advance to the state competition on April 12 at the Mississippi School of Mathematics and Science in Columbus. Gazebo Gazette
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ MEMA released its damage report from this weekend’s severe weather system. The agency recorded damage to 24 homes and two farms statewide—five on the Coast—without any injuries or deaths reported. WXXV 25
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ With Spring Break approaching, the Department of Marine Resources offered boating safety tips for those heading to the Mississippi Gulf Coast — the advice stresses that vessels must be sea-worthy and equipped with all required safety gear. Captain Michael Strickland said boaters must have a personal flotation device per person and boaters born after June 30th must carry a valid water safety certificate — guidelines aimed at preventing accidents on the waterways. - ➤ On March 31, HB 598 cleared its final vote and will become law on July 1 — raising rates for public notice ads for the first time in 27 years. The bill, filed by Rep. Jason Barnett, passed the House vote by 117 to 1 and allows newspaper publishers to charge 25 cents per word for first notices and 23 cents per word for repeat insertions while also permitting annual rate increases based on the consumer price index.
