COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The doors will open soon at the Salvation Army Kroc Center for Taste of South Mississippi—an event set to bring top coastal bites together in Biloxi. Marco Bitonel of WXXV News 25 is on site and will provide additional details.  WXXV 25
  • The Mississippi Aquarium hosted a turtle release on Biloxi Beach Thursday afternoon where eight turtles—named after Taylor Swift songs—were released into the Mississippi Sound after being rehabilitated from cold stunning. Aquarium staff answered questions and explained the turtles came from an aquarium in New England.  WXXV 25
  • Former WXXV Anchor Lori Buhring announced the Fixin’ the Coast Fix and Chips sale will start Monday, March 31 at Petco on Pass Road in Popps Ferry from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.—the sale and an Easter raffle will raise funds to support spay/neuter efforts for community cats.  WXXV 25

CRIME NEWS

  • A Jackson County man, 24-year-old Karis Hamilton, was arrested early Thursday for shooting 20-year-old Devin McDaniel at a home on Santa Fe Avenue in the St. Martin community during a domestic fight—34-year-old Rosland McDaniel, the victim’s mother, was also shot and flown to a New Orleans hospital, and Hamilton fled with his four children who were later found safe in Gautier as he now faces charges for murder and domestic violence.  WXXV 25

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Biloxi High School urges students to set up a group safety plan for prom—so everyone knows what to do if an incident happens. The school says these guidelines will help keep the celebration safe for all.  WXXV 25

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies released five rehabbed turtles on Thursday morning on a Biloxi beach as school groups participated and a teacher from Olive Branch was honored with the release (visitors came from Indiana and Illinois).  WXXV 25
  • DMR — the Department of Marine Resources — is working on Deer Island to restore 70 acres of tidal marsh and chenier habitat. The project will combat coastal land loss and protect fish and wildlife as cranes dredge sediments to rebuild the marshland.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves signed House Bill 1 on March 27th to phase out the individual income tax by cutting it to 3% by 2030 and then lowering it further to 0%. The law also reduces the grocery sales tax from 7% to 5%—a measure that could increase the state's competitive edge.  Gazebo Gazette

  • At the district tennis tournament for class 7A, St. Martin senior Paige Baronich reached her 40th varsity win and became the second player in Yellowjacket history to do so—she will try to win her second girls’ singles district title today.  WXXV 25
