COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A sports competition called Swing in the Spring — benefiting Gulf Coast Buddy Sports — will take place this Thursday at the Gulfport Sportsplex. Marquez Singleton and George Patterson offered additional details about the event.  WXXV 25
  • William the Penguin advanced in the first round of the March of the Penguin Madness contest while competing with fellow penguins nationwide. Voters can support him by clicking the photo on the Mississippi Aquarium’s Facebook page and reacting with a laugh.  WXXV 25
  • The Mississippi Aquarium is hosting meet and greet events with baby penguins on Saturdays & Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Changing Tides building through the end of April, and guests must have a ticket to attend.  WXXV 25

CRIME NEWS

  • Late Friday, Ocean Springs police began searching for 34-year-old Ian Anthony Seghers, a murder suspect from Baton Rouge wanted in Louisiana, and early Saturday they arrested him after finding him hiding in a shed in a wooded area near the residence—he was then taken to the Jackson County Adult Detention Center.  WXXV 25

CULTURE NEWS

  • On March 21st, the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park Campus hosted a yellow ribbon cutting for the Friendship Oak Beautification Project—updating sidewalks, roads, seating and the Administration Plaza with design elements that recall the campus history—while President Dr. Joseph S. Paul and local officials said the project honored the school’s grit and coastal resilience.  Gazebo Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A retired media CEO and local economic leaders are urging Coastal Mississippi to join the work of three county economic development groups to bring more jobs and growth. EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Central Upper Elementary earned a RAMP designation for its expert school counseling program — research shows the program is linked to good student outcomes. The school will be honored at an official ceremony in July.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Tate Reeves signed the Safe Solicitation Act that sets up a permit system for public panhandlers in Mississippi and outlines rules like staying within 100 feet of approved intersections & soliciting only during daylight hours.
