ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Seventeen tornadoes touched down in Mississippi last weekend—impacting more than 20 counties, killing seven people, and damaging or destroying hundreds of homes and businesses—and MEMA Director Stephan McCraney said the agency is still assessing the damage.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, Governor Reeves proclaimed Agriculture Trade Day to celebrate Mississippi's over $1 billion in agricultural and forestry exports and the hard work of local farmers—ranchers and agribusinesses. The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce will lead a trade mission to Panama next month to explore new market opportunities.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • HB 1197 — the Safe Solicitation Act — passed both legislative chambers and now awaits Gov. Reeves’ signature. If approved, the law will go into effect on July 1 and require public panhandlers to obtain permits from local governments.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • The NAACP hosted a political forum Tuesday night at the Frank Gruich Senior Center in Biloxi—city council candidates introduced themselves and answered community questions ahead of the April 1 municipal primary elections.   • The Mississippi Senate passed an amended House Bill 1 (HB1) to gradually end the income tax, cut the grocery tax from 7% to 5% starting July 1, and add funding for roads through a three-year gas tax increase while working to stabilize the state’s large retirement debt.   • Mississippi state officials warned small business owners that scam documents pretending to be from a government agency may charge fees for filing annual reports that are available free through the Secretary of State's Office (warnings note potential loss of private information) while advising caution to avoid falling victim to fraud.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
