COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CASA of South Mississippi welcomed 12 new court-appointed special advocates at the Knight Nonprofit Center in Gulfport after they completed 30 hours of training and court observation to support children in foster care. CASA is also looking for additional volunteers.  WXXV 25
  • Coast Electric hosted an event Thursday at its Kiln headquarters to highlight its Operation Round Up program that funds local charities across South Mississippi and nonprofit leaders (Excel by 5 Hancock County and CASA of South Mississippi) showed how small donations support community work.  WXXV 25
  • First Methodist Church in Long Beach hosts its Side-By-Side Respite Ministry for people with memory loss, featuring Mardi Gras-themed games, dancing, music, and food from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday (free for participants) and welcoming 8 to 15 regular guests while inviting new friends.  WXXV 25

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chevron Refinery in Pascagoula had several unit upsets Thursday evening that led to visible flaring — a safety measure to manage excess pressure and materials, and emergency officials confirmed no injuries or risk to the community.  WXXV 25

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mississippi Aquarium launches Animal Academy where visitors help train and care for its residents. The program starts this week and gives locals a hands-on way to learn about animal care.  WXXV 25
  • Hundreds of students attended MGCCC’s fourth annual Experience CTE event on Thursday at the Harrison County campus, exploring over 50 career and technical programs in the new STEM building (linking classroom skills to real-world paths). Instructors led hands-on sessions that highlighted local job opportunities.  WXXV 25

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Gulf Island National Seashore will conduct a prescribed burn in Davis Bayou Area later this month to clear dead leaves, brush, and invasive species so native plants can thrive. Trained fire crews will monitor the burn closely to create open spaces that help local wildlife flourish.  WXXV 25

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Every Wednesday, WXXV airs its Pet of the Week + features Roux from the Humane Society of South Mississippi who is looking for a forever home.  WXXV 25

  • Biloxi Breakers players discussed the fierce rivalry between Team USA and Team Canada — a contest set to excite fans at the Winter Olympics gold medal match — during an interview at the Coliseum. They look forward to the game and the passion it brings to local hockey.  WXXV 25
