EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ten Mississippi teachers were honored with the Leo W. Seal Innovative Teacher Grants on Friday morning in Gulfport; each will receive up to $2,000 (for creative classroom projects) to support hands-on learning.  WXXV 25
  • Drapundra Anderson, a second grade teacher at North Gulfport Elementary, was named January’s Teacher of the Month by Huntington Learning Center and WXXV. Nominated by Edna Curry, she is recognized for her dedication and making learning fun for her students.  WXXV 25

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Tate Reeves said Mississippi’s death toll from Winter Storm Fern rose to 16 across several counties *including Union and Alcorn*, with about 79,000 residents still without power and two linemen injured as officials advised residents to avoid driving on icy roads.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • A plant nursery in Long Beach offers tips to protect plants from sudden frost by recommending early preparation steps. WXXV's Brynne Baxley interviewed staff who advise homeowners on shielding their plants from freezing temperatures.  WXXV 25

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Jackson County Fire Protection team is hosting a blood drive at Vancleave High School today to honor Ryleigh (7) battling leukemia. The drive accepts donations from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and provides a shirt to each donor.  WXXV 25

  • Harrison Central avenged an early loss by beating West Harrison 56-36 on senior night in Gulfport, with seniors leading the effort on the hardwood.  WXXV 25
  • Former Coast alum Jeremiah McNair signed to play professional football in Germany after his standout collegiate season at Gulfport, and Sports Director Ansley Brent detailed his journey and future plans in a recent interview.  WXXV 25
