COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Cold weather shelters began operating Sunday in Harrison and Pearl River counties, with sites opening at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Harrison and saferooms in Poplarville and Picayune at noon; a Hancock County shelter now runs nights and a Gulfport pet shelter opened Sunday (services until Feb. 1). CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Beau Rivage Resort & Casino will celebrate Lunar New Year on Feb. 1 with a free lion dance at 7:15 p.m., followed by a New Year Concert at 8 p.m. in the Beau Rivage Theatre, and the buffet will offer special dishes from 5 to 10 p.m. WXXV 25
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Biloxi Shuckers announced their annual job fair on February 3 from 4:30 — 6:30 at Keesler Federal Park, where applicants can interview for gameday positions such as ushers and ticket takers. The team will begin its home slate on April 7. WXXV 25
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Memorial Health System launched a new 12-month nurse residency program in Gulfport this month to help local nursing graduates ease into practice (with clinical rotations and biweekly check-ins). The program is designed to build a solid foundation for new nurses in the region. WXXV 25
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Washington Nationals pitcher Konnor Pilkington returned to East Central High School in Hurley Saturday for his jersey retirement during the annual youth baseball camp—where young players honed their skills and celebrated his local roots. He said the honor inspires rising athletes. WXXV 25
- ➤ Derick Hall, a Gulfport native and football star for the Seattle Seahawks, will play in Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8 (game airing on WXXV NBC at 5:30 p.m.). He was a key contributor in the NFC Championship win over the Los Angeles Rams, earning his first Super Bowl appearance. WXXV 25
