COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mississippi Aviation Heritage Museum will host its fifth annual Paper Airplane contest on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — invite local flyer enthusiasts to join the fun.  WXXV 25
  • Children ages 12 and under are invited to join the Children’s Mardi Gras Walking Parade on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. in Downtown Biloxi (theme: Pop honoring pop art); application forms are available through schools and local offices and must be returned by Friday, Jan. 30.  WXXV 25

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today marks one year since snow fell along the coast, turning local beaches and backyards into winter scenes that mimicked the Midwest. Everett Ganier Jr. revisits the event that still sparks local conversation.  WXXV 25

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Gulf Coast Business Council and Southern Miss launched a nine-month AI leadership academy (GCBC-USM Executive Leadership Academy) for 25 executives to meet monthly at Gulf Park campus in Long Beach starting March 13 and running until November. Graduates will earn a certificate and digital credential for advanced AI strategy.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USCGC Olivia Hooker (a fast response cutter) arrived in Pascagoula ahead of its official commissioning later this week to support Gulf Coast port protection, drug interdiction and security efforts.  WXXV 25

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Fighting Irish soccer team clinched the District Championship on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over St. Stanislaus, finishing the regionals at 9-0 and overall at 17-2. They will face PCS on Friday night to extend their undefeated streak.  WXXV 25
  • Samantha Johnson, named WXXV Student Athlete of the Week for St. Patrick Soccer, has helped the Lady Irish secure three state championships (with 108 career saves) and will support the team during post-season play soon.  WXXV 25
