COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two cold weather shelters are set to open today in South Mississippi. The Kenny Fournier Multipurpose Center in D’Iberville opens at 4:30 p.m. and the Salvation Army Center of Hope in Gulfport opens at 6 p.m. Transportation assistance is available via Coast Transit Authority at 228-896-8080.  WXXV 25

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Boomtown Casino in Biloxi celebrated the grand opening of BAYkery today where guests sampled milkshakes, bon bons, and breakfast sandwiches. The bakery, open Wednesday through Sunday, revives a beloved community spot after more than five years.  WXXV 25

CULTURE NEWS

  • Five coastal institutions received a $20,000 legacy grant each from the America 250 Mississippi Public Arts Program — officials said the funds will soon support new public art projects along the coast.  WXXV 25

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Lynn Meadows Discovery Center in Gulfport has opened its new aquaponics exhibit to teach kids and families about sustainable food systems—highlighting hands-on STEM learning. The exhibit, housed in a shipping container, is available during regular business hours.  WXXV 25

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local officials are preparing for hazardous road conditions due to freezing temperatures and a slight chance of light snow this weekend. Emergency management crews will be on standby and advise drivers to slow down — even a small dose of ice may lead to delays.  WXXV 25
  • A new oyster shell recycling site is open at French Hermit Oysters in Ocean Springs—offering residents a chance to drop off shells from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday to support coastal restoration in Mississippi Sound.  WXXV 25

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu cases are rising along the Coast and health officials urge residents to take extra precautions — doctors recommend the flu shot and good hygiene to reduce severe illness. Seniors, young children and others with health conditions face a higher risk as the flu season intensifies.  WXXV 25
  • January is Cervical Health Awareness Month and Dr. John Pappas from Memorial Health System in Biloxi explains that one common STD raises the risk of cervical cancer. He urges residents to stay informed and get screened to protect their health.  WXXV 25
