COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army Kroc Center will host the Frosty Kroc Race this weekend for local runners+families to enjoy a fun community event.  WXXV 25

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Goodwill of South Mississippi opened its 13th outlet store in Gulfport on Thursday morning along Highway 49 with a ribbon cutting; the bin store sells items by the pound + proceeds support local job training and employment programs.  WXXV 25
  • Chris Rhodes has taken over as Coast Electric CEO following Ron Barnes’ retirement, with the change announced last June. Rhodes, who previously led Southern Pine Electric, now oversees a cooperative serving 90,000+ members in Harrison, Hancock + Pearl River counties.  WXXV 25

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today marks Elvis Presley’s 91st birthday; he was born in Tupelo to Vernon and Gladys Presley, stayed at the Gulf Hills Hotel in Ocean Springs, and performed in Biloxi in 1955, though he missed a scheduled appearance at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in 1977.  WXXV 25

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Saenger Theatre in Biloxi, work crews are adjusting carpet tiles (to align them properly), leveling the auditorium floor, and upgrading stage rigging and AV systems. The city said officials still must finalize the management plan before the facility reopens.  WXXV 25
  • Biloxi Police Chief John Miller will retire mid-January after more than 30 years on the force; he began his career on Dec. 19 and became chief in 2009. Miller said he will miss his team but is confident the department will continue serving the community well.  WXXV 25
